Summer Job Ideas for Teachers

If you find that your teacher’s salary is not adequate to cover your expenses, you may want to find a job through the summer. While you probably want to rest as much as possible during those three months that you have off, you can find work if you need it. You simply need to know where to look for seasonal summer jobs.

One option you can take is to work with your local YMCA or community center to teach classes. Fitness, art, and hobby classes are often held throughout the summer, and if you have the experience necessary to teach them, this can bring in some extra income. Keep in mind that some of these positions are volunteer positions, so make sure you are applying for a position that pays.

Similarly, places that offer summer day camp programs often hire teachers. If you do not mind hanging out with kids all summer as you do during the school year, you can get a job with one of these day camps. The benefit of working in a day camp setting is that the job coincides with your break. When you need to be back in the classroom, so do the kids that you are watching.

Consider contacting your local library to see if they have any spots that they need filled in the summer. You may find that there is room for you to handle story time or do some classes during the summer. This may be a more challenging area to get into, though, because the library will often hire high school and college students to fill in those summer gaps.

Talk to your school about summer school or tutoring opportunities. Many teachers can work a few extra weeks in the summer for summer school and make a decent amount of money. This will still give you some time off before you jump in for the next school year.

Believe it or not, you can make good money delivering pizzas. This work is in the evenings, and if you can get scheduled for busy nights, you can make up to $20 per hour when you add in your tips. This is relaxing work, provided you like to drive, and you can work part time and still make a decent amount of money.

If you cannot find employment through these venues, consider talking to a local temporary employment agency. You may be able to find a secretarial position to take you through the summer. Since jobs through temp agencies are rarely full time, you will have no trouble leaving when it is time to get back in the classroom.
